The restoration of the seventeenth-century wooden frame

According to F. Paternoster, it is the only handwork from the 17th century and of authentic Baroque style that we can find in Brienza. It was set into the central altar of the Chapel of "Madonna degli Angeli" and used to form a «rich and pompous ornament to the image of the Madonna and Child frescoed in the central void».
«The floral embroideries develop pompously in large scrolls, with rich embroidery,  harmonious symmetry, and leaves and fruits (pine cones and apples) and angels' heads and a central bell at the top complete the precious frame which still, after three centuries, shines with its original golden hue».
Removed from the Chapel during the restoration works in the 1990s, it suffered significant mutilation due to repeated moves.

The seventeenth-century dating of the frame seems to be confirmed by the circumstance that the Chapel in which it was firtsly placed was built in 1609, as can be learned from a stone shield placed on the entrance portal which bears the town's coat of arms and the words IUS P. BURGENTIAE 1609.
As can be seen from a photograph from 1966, the current condition of the frame does not correspond to the original one since the upper and lateral frieze was last, which gave it even greater value.
Even if violated, it still shows itself in all its splendor.

It needed urgent and non-deferreable restoration work because of its serious conditions of degradation, which threatened its complete collapse.

Brienza 1799 took charge of it, also thanks to the contribution of  "Brienza Restauri" company, other members and private citizens.
